Story Synopsis:
Bernard Herrmann’s unsettling score sets the tone for this unsettling tale, based on the novel, The Executioners, by John D. MacDonald. A movie so chilling it was re-made 30 years later, Cape Fear is the story of Max Cady (Mitchum), a vengeance seeking ex-con, who spent hard time behind bars to plan revenge against the lawyer who put him there. Sam Bowden (Peck) must put his beloved family’s lives in jeopardy in order to stop Max’s terrifying game of cat-and-mouse.
DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced 1.85:1 DVD exhibits a black-and-white picture with a gray scale that centers at newspaper gray. Blacks appear just slightly shy of full depth, and there are few bright whites. Still, the picture is easy on the eyes, with generally good contrast and shadow detail. Images are sharp, but fine definition is wanting. The source element is fairly clean, with minimal film grain and few artifacts, though there are a few scratches noticed from time to time. (Suzanne Hodges)
Soundtrack:
The Dolby® Digital 2.0 soundtrack is big fat mono. When Pro Logic®-decoded, the audio is properly placed in the center channel. The original audio sounds nicely restored, and free of distracting background noise. At reference level, the audio can sound a bit strident and the sonic character can error toward “tinniness,” though. (Perry Sun)
