A cop teams up with the former head of a drug cartel to avenge the death of the woman he loved in this action-rama. Sean Vetter ( Vin Diesel ) and Demetrius Hicks ( Larenz Tate ) are a pair of DEA agents who think they've made the bust of a lifetime when they capture Guillermo "Memo" Lucero ( Geno Silva ), a multi-millionaire drug lord who controlled most of the narcotics traffic along the border of Mexico and the United States. However, with Lucereo behind bars, a new and decidedly more dangerous underworld kingpin rises to take his place, and Diablo ( Timothy Olyphant ), also known as Hollywood Jack Slayton, soon proves to be even more dangerous than Lucero when he orders his gunmen to assassinate Vetter. While Vetter escapes unharmed, his wife is killed, and Vetter is thrown deep into despair. Now Vetter is obsessed with bringing Diablo to justice, and he's willing to do anything to bring him down — even if it means teaming up with Lucero. — Mark Deming

Story Synopsis:
Sean Vetter (Diesel) and Demetrius Hicks (Tate) are a pair of DEA agents who have just captured Guillermo “Memo” Lucero (Silva), a wealthy drug lord who controlled most of the narcotics traffic along the border of Mexico and the United States. Yet an even more dangerous underworld kingpin takes over with Lucero behind bars...Diablo, aka Hollywood Jack Slayton (Olyphant). When Diablo’s gunmen fail to assassinate Vetter, they do manage to kill his wife. Overcome with despair, Vetter separates himself as A Man Apart of the DEA in an effort to exact personal vengeance...even if it means seeking assistance from Lucero. (Suzanne Hodges)

DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced 2.35:1 DVD exhibits a picture with a gritty texture that seems to visually complement the storytelling. The color scheme is rich with thick bold hues. Blacks are unparalleled in depth, and viewing in a completely blackened room is recommended for the extremely dark scenes (like Chapters 10 through 12). The bright reds and blues from the police lightbars pierce through the black night scenes. Fleshtones are nicely rendered. Many scenes are highly contrasted, while others appear sundrenched and warm. Edge enhancement can create an unnaturally “edgy” appearance and pixelization can cause some minor detail breakup. Still, this highly stylized picture is quite suitable for the harsh storytelling. (Suzanne Hodges)

Also includes a modified 1.33:1 (4:3) version (not reviewed).

Soundtrack:
The Dolby® Digital 5.1 soundtrack features a powerful, sometimes even menacing soundtrack, with extreme, energetic low frequencies from all channels including the LFE. The soundstage is very active and engaging throughout. Usually the music defines the dimensionality, but peripheral and acute sound effects are no short shrift. The split surrounds figure very prominently, and you certainly won’t be disappointed with the abundance of effects pans including gunshots. The soundspace is essentially “busy” throughout. There’s also unusually substantial low-end content in the surrounds. Overall, fidelity is excellent, and the dialogue production is exemplary. (Perry Sun)
