Four men are changed forever by an act of mercy — changes which have a profound impact many years later — in this blend of horror and science fiction based on a novel by Stephen King . Jonsey ( Damian Lewis ), Henry ( Thomas Jane ), Pete ( Timothy Olyphant ), and Beaver ( Jason Lee ) were four friends who, as schoolboys, rescued a boy with Down's Syndrome, Duddits ( Donnie Wahlberg ), from a savage beating at the hands of bullies. Their experience with Duddits left the boys profoundly changed, as they discovered they had developed psychic powers which allowed them to wordlessly communicate with one another, read the minds of others, and see events in the future. The four remained close friends into adulthood, and meet every year for a weekend get-together at a remote hunting lodge. However, one year Jonsey is approached by the spirit of Duddits, which leads him into a severe auto accident, though his wounds heal with mysterious speed and are gone by the time he and the guys get together a few months later. As the guys drink and swap stories, a desperately ill hunter makes his way into the cabin, whose body has become the host for a horrible wormlike creature, which breaks free and soon goes on a killing spree, leaving only Henry alive. In the wake of is attack comes a massive snowstorm, and Henry learns that these events are the first signs of a major attack by a powerful alien force which can assume any form it wishes. As duplicitous military leader Col. Abraham Curtis ( Morgan Freeman ) comes in to quell the menace, Henry finds himself in communication with the late Jonsey, whose previous near-death experience gives him an unexpected advantage in stemming the alien tide. — Mark Deming

Story Synopsis:
After four friends perform a compassionate act as children and gain psychic powers in return, they reunite every winter in Maine to hunt, drink, and celebrate the special bond they share. However, this year’s reunion is ruined when a lost and disoriented hunter stumbles upon their camp mumbling about strange lights in the sky. Soon after, horrific creatures begin to emerge and a heavily armed government operative, led by the psychotic Colonel Curtis (Freeman), attempts to take over the area. Challenged to stop an alien menace, the friends must confront an unparalleled horror while they take part in an all-out battle to rescue the fate of humanity. "Dreamcatcher" is based on the book by Stephen King. (Suzanne Hodges)

DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced 2.40:1 DVD exhibits a picture that is sharp and detailed, with excellent textures and background definition. The color scheme is quite natural, with accurate fleshtones, rich hues, and deep blacks. Some scenes are saturated in cold blue hues. The flashback scenes are depicted with warm yellows to give a nostalgic appearance. The snowy setting looks quite natural and provides excellent contrast when it’s stained with blood. While contrast and shadow delineation are quite capable with this title, viewing in a completely blackened room is recommended to appreciate the subtle details in the dimly lit cabin. Edge enhancement is not much of an issue with this title, and pixelization-which can create a minor digital appearance-is limited. (Suzanne Hodges)

Soundtrack:
The Dolby® Digital 5.1 audio is fantastic. The sonic character is pristine, neutral in tonality, and certainly indicative of a state-of-the-art recording. The music is of very fine fidelity, and its integration into the listening space results in a very compelling perception of holosonic™ immersion, and as well, expansiveness. The spatial soundstage also excels with the engagement of ambient and acutely directional sound effects, the latter of which also features aggressive split surround channel activity. The moments of relative quiescence are also of significance, as you focus in on subtle sounds such as footsteps in the snow, as well as visceral cues from the music, and then suddenly are offset by the onset of sounds in concert with intense activity on-screen. The dialogue is outstanding, with voices that sound compellingly natural and well-integrated with the visuals. (Perry Sun)
