Rumored and anticipated for years, the two biggest icons of the slasher genre finally meet in Freddy Vs. Jason , the eighth entry in the Nightmare on Elm Street saga and the 11th film in the Friday the 13th series, though with Jason X taking place in the future, it should be noted that the events of this film take place after the ninth film Jason Goes to Hell . And it is hell where Freddy Kreuger ( Robert Englund ) and Jason Voorhies ( Ken Kirzinger , donning the hockey mask for the first time) finally become acquainted. Banished there for eternity, Freddy devises a plan to manipulate Jason into continuing his work, hacking up the teenagers of Elm Street. All goes well at first until Jason realizes he's been duped by "the dream master" and is none too pleased. Coaxed by surviving teenagers Will ( Jason Ritter ), Lori ( Monica Keena ), and Kia ( Destiny's Child 's Kelly Rowland ), Jason and Freddy descend upon Crystal Lake for a mano a mano battle royal. Helmed by Hong Kong director Ronny Yu ( Bride of Chucky , The Bride With the White Hair ), Freddy Vs. Jason features the director of the first Friday film, Sean S. Cunningham serving as producer. — Matthew Tobey

Story Synopsis:
Freddy Krueger (Englund) is really angry. Who’s that, you ask? It seems everyone has forgotten what a nightmare he used to be. No one is afraid of him anymore. They can barely even remember his name. Desperate to ravage dreams once again with his reign of terror, he enlists the help of Jason Vorhees (Ken Kirzinger) to scare the living daylights out of the teenagers. When the kids go to sleep, Freddy can start having some fun. But when Jason starts to steal the show, it’s up to Freddy to get creative in order to get the bloody credit he deserves. Blood and boobs galore, horror fans are sure to welcome Freddy and Jason back to the genre. (Suzanne Hodges)

DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced 2.35:1-framed DVD looks horrifyingly fantastic, especially in the darker scenes! Colors are richly saturated and perfectly contrasted to the deep, endless blacks. Images are sharp and detailed, with excellent contrast and shadow delineation that allows for just enough visual information in the suspenseful dark scenes. The picture is slick and clean, with only minor pixelization and some edge enhancement in the brighter scenes to distract. (Suzanne Hodges)

The disc also includes a modified 1.33:1 (4:3) version -- not reviewed.

Soundtrack:
The Dolby® Digital Surround EX™ soundtrack is incredible for its creative and technical merits. The audio in general is powerful, often rather loud, dynamic, and very well-recorded. The use of the dimensional soundstage is exemplary in terms of really engaging you into the depths of the storytelling. Atmospheric effects are effectively placed all around you throughout the movie, even during scenes that do not pertain to the horror and intensity. In many respects, the manner in which the main channels are utilized serve to enhance the suspense and fear, and this itself should be considered an artistic achievement. Like many horror movies with great sound, the use of very wide dynamic plays a vital role. In addition to the aggressive engagement of space, the imaging is outstanding, and you can certainly place sounds in definite locations all around you, and in between the physical speaker locations. This would include the three surround channels, all of which were outstandingly utilized. The music is a wonderful recording and has a palpable deep bass presence, while at the same time possessing distinguished surround sound attributes of its own. The dialogue is superlative with very natural-sounding voices and spatial integration. Last but not least, bass is downright deep and powerful in all channels, and prominent LFE channel activity is to be expected. This is definitely one of the standouts in movie sound presentation, a sound mix that was optimized for home theatre.P (Perry Sun)
