Story Synopsis:
Disney’s classic "20,000 Leagues Under The Sea" tells Jules Verne’s gripping story of Captain Nemo (Mason), the brilliant but flawed sea captain who pits his incredible submarine Nautilus against the world. After attacking a Navy ship, Nemo rescues several survivors, including the feisty harpooner Ned Land (Douglas) and the Conseil (Lorre). They find that Nemo is an unstable genius who has built the most advanced yet deadly craft in the world. Ned and his group persuade Nemo to share his inventions with mankind, but before he can do so, warships attack the Nautilus and force Ned and his friends to confront Nemo once and for all. (Suzanne Hodges)
DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced 2.55:1 DVD exhibits a picture that has a dated appearance with colors that can appear a bit subdued at times. However, the furnishings inside the Nautilus can be nicely saturated with bold reds. Images can be quite sharp, but have a bit of an undefined appearance with slightly low contrast. There is some minor edge enhancement noticed at times, as well as some pixelization. The source element is quite clean, with a few flecks of dirt and minor film grain. (Suzanne Hodges)
Soundtrack:
The Dolby® Digital 5.1-channel soundtrack is a repurposing of the vintage audio. The restoration of the original recording is remarkable, though it also preserves the inherently dated fidelity and distortion, as well as the somewhat brittle sonic character. The soundstage is substantially reserved in nature, with very modest surround channel activity. In Chapter 8, there’s a rather peculiar use of reverb processing, which likely can be attributed to this soundtrack repurposing. Deep bass also is noticeably constrained, with LFE channel activity being very minor. (Perry Sun)
