When Dante Hicks ( Brian O’Halloran ) is reluctantly put in charge of the Quick Stop market on his day off, he tries, though half-heartedly, to perform his minimum-wage duties as efficiently as possible. This gets tough amidst the on-going fight with his girlfriend, Veronica ( Marilyn Ghigliotti ), and his attempt to get back together with his ex-girlfriend, Caitlyn Bree ( Lisa Spoonhauer ). Meanwhile, his friend and alter ego Randall ( Jeff Anderson ) is working behind the counter of the adjacent video store—at least when he feels like it. Randall’s unabashed disdain of his place of employment, a long with his self-admitted hatred towards its customers is a sharp contrast to Dante’s feeble attempts at the niceties of customer service. Much of the film consists of Randall and Dante’s criticism of their customers, their lives, and the world in general. Clerks , filmed in black-and-white on a budget of only $27,000, began the career of writer director Kevin Smith , who would go on to make Mallrats (1995), Chasing Amy (1997), Dogma (1999), and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001). — Hal Erickson

Story Synopsis:
If you haven’t yet been to Quick Stop Groceries or RST Video... what are you waiting for! Check in with Dante and Randal, two honorable Clerks who wreak havoc on their stores and play games with their customers heads.

DVD Picture:
The 1.85:1 DVD is not anamorphically enhanced, and exhibits similar quality to the LaserDisc reviewed in Issue 16. The black-and-white picture exhibits a good grayscale, with deep blacks and bright whites. Contrast and shadow delineation are mediocre and inconsistent. Images are generally sharp and detailed, though fine detail and definition are wanting. Minor artifacts are apparent, and overall the picture isn’t visually pleasing.

Soundtrack:
The matrix Dolby® Surround audio works fine for this low-budget film. The DVD sounds similar to the previously reviewed LaserDisc versions. The hard-rock music fills the listening space with an aggressive presence, but sometimes is too bright. The dialogue is strident with pronunciation of hard consonants, and is sometimes evident of poor looping. There also seems to be a phase alignment problem with the matrix-encoded stereo tracks, causing dialogue to "split" into the surrounds. Nonetheless, for a low-scale production, commendation is due to the filmmakers for the effort to produce a multichannel soundtrack.
