Rowan Atkinson

Comic actor Rowan Atkinson brought his bumbling character Mr. Bean from television to the big screen with this British comedy. Mr. Bean ( Rowan Atkinson ) is a well-meaning but not especially bright fellow with a gift for making the worst of any situation. Bean is about to be fired from his job as a guard at the Royal Nation Art Gallery for sleeping on the job, but the Chairman ( John Mills ) intervenes at the last moment. To insure that his incompetence will manifest itself so completely that there will be no choice but to get rid of him, Bean's superiors come up with a plan — they'll send him to America to speak at a posh private gallery owned by George Grierson ( Harris Yulin ), where General Newton ( Burt Reynolds ) will display the most recent addition to his art collection, "Whistler's Mother." It's even money whether or not the museum will still be standing before Bean is done; as if this weren't enough, while in L.A. Bean is mistaken for a surgeon and forced to operate on an injured police officer. Richard Curtis , one of the film's producers, said after viewing the final product, "It's an unpleasant family movie. I'm very pleased." — Mark Deming

Story Synopsis:
The hilarious Atkinson, aka Mr. Bean, is an incompetent museum associate assigned to escort the world famous painting of “Whistler’s Mother” to its new home in California’s Grierson Gallery. The museum owner (Yulin) and his curator David Langley (MacNicol) believe that the eccentric Mr. Bean is actually renowned art expert Dr. Bean. Langley soon discovers that Bean is a clumsy, constantly mugging museum guard who knows absolutely nothing about the painting. But when something terrible happens to “Whistler’s Mother” just hours before her unveiling, only one man can put it right-and that man is Bean.

DVD Picture:
The non-anamorphic DVD exhibits slightly sharper imagery when compared to the LaserDisc and, in the component video format, presents slightly fuller color saturation and detail. Both versions are good looking with deep, solid blacks and vibrant colors. Chroma noise and other artifacts are virtually undetected on both the LaserDisc and DVD. The LaserDisc and DVD aspect ratios are matted at 1.85:1.

Soundtrack:
The Dolby® Digital 5.1 discrete and matrix PCM soundtracks sound rather conventional, though at times there is an aggressive surround presence with the occasional split surround effect in the discrete version. Surprisingly, the Dolby Digital soundtracks on both the DVD and LaserDisc are plagued with background noise and hum while the PCM LaserDisc soundtrack is quiet. But often the discrete reproduces ambient sounds that are undistinguished in the matrix version. Dialogue often sound ADR-produced and unnatural. The music is generally well recorded with the added presence of deep and powerful bass delivered by the discrete’s .1 low frequency effects channel.
