Season 2
14. Valley of the Shadow
gs: Rob LaBelle (Arthur Markoff) Sean Patrick Flanery (Greg Stillson) Eric Schaeffer (Francis Ritter)
The season premiere finds Johnny still shaken by his Armageddon visions and growing increasingly obsessed with Stillson, whom he's secretly following to try and gain further visions. But his powers seem to be on the blink, which is poor timing when a CEO's son is stolen by a mysterious kidnapper who seems fascinated by Johnny and taunts him with a series of biblical clues. Johnny eventually tracks the missing boy and the kidnapper, Ritter - the owner of a small company that the CEO bought out. Ritter tells Johnny that Smith is Daniel the prophet and he has to save the world by helping it to save itself, before killing himself in a police gunfight. Meanwhile, Stilson takes a sexual interest in Sarah Bannerman.
b: 05-Jan-2003 pc: 2002 w: Michael Taylor d: Michael Robison
NOTE: Originally the episode was to begin with a "documentary" detailing Johnny's rise to fame, narrated by Jonathan Frakes and featuring the fan guy from "Unreasonable Doubt", and bringing new viewers up to speed. It was dropped in the interests of time but some of the footage is to appear in subsequent episodes.
• Aired on the "Sci-Fi Channel" on January 17, 2003 at its new time slot of 7:00 P.M.

Johnny's link is killing him as well, and as the two men spiral downwards Johnny tells Walt of his brief fling with Sarah (in "Destiny"). This spurs Walt to fight back and bring them both out of their coma...although Walt remembers nothing of what Johnny told him.

Later Thomas comes clean to Claire about his actions and the reasons behind it. He then reveals his true feelings for her. While saving a young boy, Johnny is severely injured in the process. He is rushed to the hospital where he is given a blood transfusion after suffering from internal bleeding. When Johnny awakens, he is shocked to find out that the mother of the boy he saved is suing him for reckless endangerment. But, what blows his mind is that he starts experiencing the daily lives of the six donors through visions as a result of the transfusion that he received. Dr. Gibson tells him that this will only be temporary and that it should go away in about a month when their blood filters out of his system. Johnny attempts to return to his life, but being part of the lives of the donors proves to be both distracting and uncomfortable. As it continues, he gets a vision of the death of one of the donors. With only two hours to spare, Bruce and Johnny attempt to locate all the donors and narrow it down to the one who will fall to the ground and die.
It isn't easy because each person is experiencing what is perceived to be a life-threatening situation. They seem to be in danger, when Shari's ex-boyfriend becomes furious after he sees them sitting together.
The situation looks grim because time is running out and they haven't figure out what the cause of the one donor's death will be so that they could prevent it. Then Johnny realizes through a vision that by Bruce and him attempting to help these people get through what seems to be their darkest hour, they have set a series of events in motion that once again intertwines the lives of the donors for a moment to save the bicycle messenger from being hit by a car.

NOTE: The 10 copies of the book that Jonah had in his hand, which made the Bookstore Manager happy that finally someone (Johnny) had purchased it was the novel version of the movie, Star Trek: Insurrection(1998). This seems to be a joke commenting on the movie receiving a very mix response from both critics and Star Trek fans.

• Michael Piller took the idea of a mysterious tornado from a similar incident that occurred at Lake Cobbosseecontee, Maine in 1998.
• This episode marks the premiere of the extended summer second season, nicknamed by fans as Season 2.5. "Dead Zone" castmember, John L. Adams (Bruce) wrote in his "behind the scenes" column on the official website that producers referred to these summer episodes as "The Sexy Summer Six." The unaired episode, "The Hunt" was later added into the schedule.
• Frank Whaley is credited on-screen, reflecting the first of several appearance he'll be making up to the season finale where he plays a major role. The USA Network website doesn't credit him, presumably to keep the exact nature of his role a secret.
• Much confusion originally arose over whether this episode was the start of a new season - even after USA and various other sources stated the last six episodes would just be a continuation of season 2, on-air commercials continued to refer to an "all-new season of The Dead Zone."

b: 27-Jul-2003 pc: 2012 w: Michael Taylor s: Joe McMoneagle & Michael Piller d: James Head
NOTE: Originally scheduled to air March 30, 2003. This episode seems to have been taken off the Season 2 schedule because of the war with Iraq.
• It makes some sense that this episode was originally supposed to air after "The Man Who Never Was", because the main character of that episode, Jeffrey Grissom, said to Johnny, "Did you know that the government uses psychics?" In "The Hunt", that is the topic of the episode.
• The episode was originally entitled "The Hunt for Osama."
• This episode aired in Latin America on channel AXN on Wednesday: June 11, 2003. During the episode there was a shot of the U.S.S. Enterprise, probably an inside joke. The show aired again at 2 a.m. and at 2 p.m. the following day, with another repeat on Sunday at 5 p.m.
• Due to USA Network concerns, Osama bin Laden is never mentioned by name on-screen.
• None of the regular cast besides Hall appear, although David Ogden Stiers does the voiceover at the beginning and John L. Adams is briefly heard on Johnny's answering machine.
• Note also that Colonel Halsey refers to the "Grissom affair."

They find the plane but Walt manages to get there and Johnny tells Mark the ranger is sleeping with his wife. The ranger shoots Mark, Sarah attacks Pauline, and when the ranger gets the drop on Walt, Sarah shoots him.
b: 03-Aug-2003 pc: 2017 w: Michael Cassutt d: Mike Rohl
NOTE: The episode was originally entitled "The Mountain High."
• John L. Adams doesn't appear in this episode.
• Frank Whaley continues to receive an up-front credit, despite the fact that in this episode he has no dialogue and his face is only glimpsed for a second. The USA Network site continues not to list him or the character he plays on their own cast credits, maintaining the mystery of who the heck this guy is.

Bruce visits with an old boxer friend, Danny, along with Johnny, and Johnny gets a vision of Danny dying in the ring during his next fight. Even that doesn't work and Bruce convinces Johnny that Johnny has to believe. But Danny still goes down . . . and gets back up to take on his opponent even though he loses the match.
b: 10-Aug-2003 pc: 2018 w: Michael Taylor d: James Head
NOTE: Once again Frank Whaley is up-front credited despite having only a split-second appearance with no dialogue.
• Nicole de Boer and Chris Bruno don't appear in this episode.
• In the opening sequnce Greg Serano (as Danny Avila) said "We're having a baby, baby!" However the first take he did he ended up saying "We're making a baby, baby!" At which point the director ordered him not to make babies on camera.
32. Visions
gs: Brenna O'Brien (Julia Wey) Frank Whaley (Christopher Wey) Hrothgar Matthews (Lt. Sandowski) Ione Skye (Madeleine Wey)
At a race with Sara and J.J., Johnny sees the mysterious scarred man in black again – the man is part of his visions and knows Johnny is watching him. Johnny warns present-Wey to stay away from the house but he ignores Johnny's advice and takes his family back there. Present-Wey goes into the house and Gale hits him over the head, but Johnny and Bruce get there in time to save Madeleine and Julia. Present-Wey is knocked into his coma. A little later future-Wey shows up again and asks Johnny to watch over his family in return for information from the future – Johnny agrees and Wey shows him an issue of Newsweek, dated September 2010, with a picture of Johnny and the headline, "Will This Man Destroy the World?"
b: 17-Aug-2003 pc: 2019 w: Craig Silverstein d: Michael Robison
NOTE: Season 2 Finale
• This is the third (and largest) appearence of the mysterious man that appears in Johnny's visions. (First being "The Storm", and the second being "The Mountain")
• Actually, it's the fourth appearance - the mysterious man also appeared in "The Combination."
• Frank Whaley (Christopher Wey) and Ione Skye (Madeleine Wey) previously appeared together in the 1998 movie "Went to Coney Island on a Mission From God... Be Back by Five." That movie uses a lot of interwoven flashbacks and past-present mixtures, just like The Dead Zone.
