Over a year has passed since the events of Day One. President David Palmer is fishing with his son in Oregon when he learns of an emergency. He is taken
to his underground bunker, where he learns that a Middle Eastern terrorist group known as Second Wave is planning to set off a nuclear bomb in Los Angeles
sometime that day.

At CTU, George Mason is ordered to contact Jack Bauer, who may be able to provide a lead to the terrorists.

Jack has been out of commission since the death of his wife. He is also estranged from his daughter Kim, who is now working as an au pair. He isn't interested in returning to work, but changes his mind when Palmer personally requests his help.

Kim overhears her boss abusing his wife, so she locks herself and their little girl in the bedroom. Gary forces his way in and attacks Megan.

A young girl named Marie is marrying a man who may have connections to the leader of the terrorist group.

At CTU, Jack learns that the key to finding the bomb rests with a group of American terrorists whom he infiltrated once before.

b: 29-Oct-2002 pc: 2AFF01 w: Joel Surnow & Michael Loceff d: Jon Cassar

NOTE: Originally aired without commercial interruption, courtesy sponsorship by Ford. The episode ran 51:43 with the rest of the hour filled by two extended-length Ford commercials and FOX promos for John Doe and next week's episode of 24. Though it was rebroadcast on both FOX and FX on November 4, the FX airing was also commercial free and, excepting the end credits and pre-credit bumpers, as originally presented on FOX. FOX's rerun was a shorter version with commercial breaks and a running time of 43:56. Please note that the recap follows the long version. Also note that even that version was cut down from what was originally filmed, as evidenced by the number of guest stars credited in TV Guide that don't actually appear. For a detailed comparison of the short and long versions of this episode, please visit the "Analysis" section.
Vicellous Reon Shannon is credited as Vicellous Shannon.
Fox executives predicted that the "Hacksaw" line would be removed from the final cut. It obviously stayed, and became one of the series' most memorable quotes.
This was one of two episodes Fox circulated among Emmy voters.
The six scenes deleted in the short version were again shown when the episode aired commercial-free on the FX "24 Hours of 24" marathon on Labor Day, 2003. The entire episode is also available on the Season 2 DVD
According to an interview with Reiko Aylesworth (Michelle Dessler) her character and Paula Shaeffer were going to be one character. The production decided to split them after they realized that someone had to die in the CTU explosion later on.
As of this episode, Xander Berkeley (Mason) and Carlos Bernard (Tony) were regular cast members, after having recurring appearances in season 1.
The DVD release states that this season takes place 18 months after the first (which took place on Tuesday, March 2nd of a Presidential voting year, likely 2004), making this roughly September. This day is also said to be a Saturday.

NOTE: Vicellous R. Shannon is credited for appearing in the episode, but he was cut from the final print. The deleted scene is available to view on the Season 2 DVD set.
Nina Landey (Eve, the woman stabbed by Kingsley) played a different character (Amanda) in season 1's 2:00 P.M.-3:00 P.M.
The scene where Jack chases Hewitt on the roof was originally going to take place on a busy highway. This scene was detailed in an online exclusive on the official 24 site.
The Season 2 DVD set contains a two-part documentary that details the making of the final two episodes of the season.

b: 20-May-2003 pc: 2AFF24 w: Joel Surnow & Michael Loceff d: Jon Cassar

NOTE: The ending moments of this episode signal the third time the clock didn't produce the ticking noise. The first time was when Teri died in the season 1 finale. The second was as Mason left CTU for the last time in season 2 episode 9-10 P.M. If the pattern holds, things don't look so good for Palmer.
Mia Kirshner is not credited in the opening or closing cast credits. Clearly because her return was a surprise.
Is the highest rated episode of the first two seasons, with 14.2 million viewers.
During lunch breaks the crew played football on the playing field.
The scene in the LA Collisium was originally going to take place at the Hollywood Bowl, but they could not get permission.
The producers of the show needed to make sure that none of the extras in the final scene would leak the ending to the press. So they ended up shooting an extra part of the scene that features David Palmer getting up and getting into his limo after being attack by the unknown weapon. People would just say that Palmer got knocked out but he got back up, only to find the last part of the scene cut in the final product.
An additional scene was filmed, but never really intended to air. It is additional footage of Max after Mandy's call. A woman places her bandaged hand on Max's shoulder. He whispers something to her, then she bends down to kiss him. It is then we realize the woman is Nina, who has been behind it all along. They cut it because they realized they couldn't possibly explain it given the show's time frame.
The man who fought with jack is uncredited, as are Kingsley's snipers.

Story Synopsis:
Welcome to another 24 hours of action packed drama with Jack Bauer (Sutherland) of CTU returning to help find evil terrorists set a nuclear bomb off on American soil. Is the American government as corrupt as we believe? Were they involved in the plot to kill several Los Angeles citizens? It’s going to take you 24 hours to find out. This popular series was created by Joel Surnow and Robert Cochran. (Maryellen Oswald)

DVD Picture:
Consistent with the look of Season One, the anamorphically enhanced 1.78:1 DVDs present this television series with somewhat satisfying image quality, though the overall look is quite “digital.” While images are generally sharp, fine details often shimmer and break apart. Colors are nicely balanced with accurate fleshtones, warm hues, and deep blacks. Shadow delineation and contrast are nicely balanced. Edge enhancement adds an offensive white halo around images, giving the picture even less dimension. Moiré patterns and aliasing problems also distract. Grain inherent in the source element gives the picture a stylish, raw appearance. While the picture is intended to look unpolished, distractions often negatively outweigh the look of the series. (Suzanne Hodges)

Soundtrack:
The Dolby® Digital 5.1-channel soundtrack, originally produced for television, is sometimes lively and spacious, making effective use of the surrounds, even aggressively during poignant moments. The music delivers a panoramic presence across the screen channels, as do atmospheric effects. Dialogue sounds reasonably natural and integrated with the visuals. Some deep bass content can be noticed as well with punctuated LFE channel engagement. Dynamic range is somewhat more reserved than for a high-profile Hollywood action feature. (Perry Sun)
