gs: Sarah Wynter (Kate Warner) Joaquim de Almeida (Ramon Salazar) Christina Chang (Dr. Sunny Macer) Wendy Crewson (Anne Packard) Vanessa Ferlito (Claudia Salazar) Vincent Laresca (Hector Salazar) Riley Smith (Kyle Singer) DB Woodside (Wayne Palmer) Jesse Borrego (Gael Ortega) Carlos Gomez (Luis Annicon) Glenn Morshower (Agent Aaron Pierce) Lucinda Jenney (Helen Singer) Agnes Bruckner (Linda) Kett Turton (Tim) Zachary Quinto (Adam Kaufman) Mary Lynn Rajskub (Chloe O'Brian) Lorry Goldman (Douglas Shaye) Mark Arnott (Chuck)

Three years have passed since the events of Day Two. A van deposits a dead
body outside the LA Health Unit. The body is infected with a deadly virus.
Tony, now in charge of CTU, learns that this is a blackmail tactic to get
the US government to release a drug lord, Ramon Salazar, whom Jack has just brought down, before
Salazar's brother releases the virus into LA.

Jack and his new partner, Chase Edmunds, prepare to sign a deal with Salazar at the prison. Salazar delivers a mysterious warning to Jack before killing his lawyer.

Palmer is alive and well, and has returned to LA for the first time since
the attack three years ago. He is running for re-election and is preparing
for an important debate with a rival senator. He is accompanied by his brother, who happens to be his chief of
staff and his doctor, who also happens to be his girlfriend.

A young boy, Kyle Singer, is seen examining a large, mysterious bag of white
powder. He plans to deliver it to some dealers later that day, but he is being watched by Salazar's men.

Kim now works at CTU and has been dating Chase for three months. Kim wants
to tell her father, but Jack has a mysterious health problem that may make things more
complicated.

b: 28-Oct-2003 pc: 3AFF01 w: Joel Surnow & Michael Loceff d: Jon Cassar

NOTE: This episode aired 100% commercial free in North America. The "real time" premiere ran for only about 51 minutes.
A 3-minute trailer for this season's premiere aired during Fox's presentation of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon on September 7th, 2003.
A 2-minute version of that preview aired in theaters through-out the month of October as well.
The tattoo Kiefer Sutherland has on his wrist during the final scene is real. Sutherland opted to get it permanently instead of reapplying make up everyday.
This is the first Season Premiere that doesn't start in another country.
Fox aired an edited 43-minute version of this episode with commercials twice after the full-length premier. It was broadcast on 10-30-03 and 11-04-03 before Hour Two.
Reiko Aylesworth (Michelle) is now a series regular after recurring in Season 2. James Badge Dale (Chase) is also a series regular.
Ford, the primary sponsor of the premier, incorporated 24 and the character of Jack Bauer into the two-part commercial that aired before and after this episode. AlthoughKiefer Sutherland did not appear, nor did any other 24 actor, the commercial featured a Jack Bauer llook-alike, foreign spies, a secret tracker, money and a car chase that involved the Fored F-150. Jack Bauer was mentioned by name, but the commercial was clearly meant to compliment 24 without stepping on any toes.
This episode marks the first time that a flashback is used to start the episode before the real-time clock begins to tick.

b: 04-Nov-2003 pc: 3AFF02 w: Joel Surnow & Michael Loceff d: Jon Cassar

NOTE: This episode marks the first time that a place (Counter Terrorist Unit) gets a spot (freeze frame with the name written on the screen) during the "previouslies" instead of a person.

b: 11-Nov-2003 pc: 3AFF03 w: Howard Gordon d: Ian Toynton

NOTE: According to his license, Kyle Singer was born on November 19, 1987. Since he is referred to as 19 years old, this would place the action around 2006-2007.
During the original Global Ontario (Toronto) broadcast of this episode, an unscheduled commercial break took place right after Tony was shot and the end splitscreens. This behavior continued during the broadcast of "Day 3: 4:00P.M. - 5:00P.M.". After the break appeared in Hour 4, fans disgusted with the extra commercial wrote in Global saying, "Taking a break in the middle of this show destroys it's real-time concept," and "Why are you tampering with a successful formula?" After these letters were mailed in, Global put a stop to the extra commercial.

b: 25-Nov-2003 pc: 3AFF05 w: Evan Katz d: Jon Cassar

NOTE: Aired with a Viewer Discretion Warning for graphic violence.
Sarah Clarke receives the coveted "and" credit.
Penny Johnson Jerald is credited as a "Special Guest Star." She was credited under that same title during most of Season One.
Vanessa Ferlito stated in an interview that Claudia and Jack were supposed to have a future together, but the writers had to kill her off when she chose to sign on to the Tommy Lee Jones comedy, Cheer Up. She felt this was a golden opportunity, since the producers at 24 never signed her to a long term contract.

Much of the technological computer terminology tossed out during CTU's efforts to stop Nina's computer worm are simply random terms and phrases nonsensically strung together.

SylviaImports.com, the website Saunders gives to Palmer, is owned by 24 director Rodney Charters. There is only simple text, which reads: Sylviaimports.com A Big Thank-you from the crew of 24. Thanks for watching, we love making it for you, and yes, we did get picked up for Season 4.
A scene was cut from the final print of this episode, featuring Jack alone in his car weaping over the death of Chappelle. It bares a striking similarity to the last scene in the season finale. Presumably, the writers liked the idea of Jack breaking down alone and saved the idea for the final dramatic moment.

Story Synopsis:
When the FBI receives a phone call threatening the city of Los Angeles with the release of a deadly virus, it is once again up to Jack Bauer (Sutherland) to get down to business. Negotiating with terrorists is not an option, especially when they are demanding the release of druglord Ramon Salazar. Bauer is going to have to get to the source of the virus, but it’s going to take 24 hours to find out how it's all going to end. This popular series was created by Joel Surnow and Robert Cochran. (Suzanne Hodges)

DVD Picture:
As with the first two seasons of 24, the anamorphically enhanced 1.78:1 DVDs present this television series with somewhat satisfying image quality, though the overall look can be “digital.” Colors are nicely balanced with accurate fleshtones, warm hues, and deep blacks. Edge enhancement can be offensive at times. Grain inherent in the source element gives the picture a stylish, raw appearance. (Suzanne Hodges)

Soundtrack:
The front three screen channels present a very wide, alive stage, with detectable imaging across the screen. This Dolby® Digital 5.1-channel soundtrack also incorporates a dependable use of surround channels to help bring life to the action. Music is generally presented through the front three channels, with surrounds used for ambiance and to allow for more robust imaging. Fidelity is crisp and clean, helping this made-for-TV release mimic its Hollywood feature film counterparts. Deep bass articulation is slightly lacking, with bass sounding slightly diffused. (Danny Richelieu)
