Also available in “The Clint Eastwood Collection” (which consists of “Bronco Billy,” “The Beguiled,” “Dirty Harry,” “In The Line Of Fire,” “The Outlaw Josey Wales” and “Unforgiven”) -- catalog number 18762/99.98.
Story Synopsis:
From the novel by Thomas Cullinan, The Beguiled is a gory Civil War drama with an unusual sexual twist. When Union soldier John McBurney (Clint Eastwood) is wounded and dying, he is rescued and nursed back to health by the girls and staff of Martha Farnsworth‘s (Geraldine Page) Seminary for Young Ladies in the South. At first they plan to turn him over to the confederate patrols, but the headmistress-and a few of the girls-have other ideas for the flirtatious Corporal McBurney. Certain scenes are not for the squeamish.
DVD Picture:
The picture is anamorphically enhanced and, when viewed in component video, looks natural, but dated. Interior scenes appear quite natural, with accurate fleshtones, warm colors and deep, undefined blacks. Images are sharp, but lack fine background detail. Exteriors are also nicely rendered with lush greenery, though sometimes wanting in contrast. Darker interior scenes exhibit good shadow delineation, though the film should be watched in a completely darkened room for the best possible viewing. The picture is generally solid, with no distracting noise, though minor artifacts are apparent. The anamorphic and letterbox aspect ratio measures 1.85:1.
Soundtrack:
The monaural soundtrack has been encoded in two-channel Dolby® Digital for an undistinguished and overall distracting experience. Dialogue is thin and strident.
