Story Synopsis:
Based on the novel by Stephen King, The Dead Zone stars Christopher Walken as Johnny Smith, a man just awakening from a five-year coma. His world has shattered around him; he’s lost everything important to him, but he has something new: psychic powers that allow him to see visions of the past, present, and the future. His dilemma is, how should he use his newfound powers?
DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced 1.78:1 DVD exhibits a dated picture that is generally sharp and detailed throughout. Sometimes fine details are nicely rendered, while other times images are a bit soft. Colors are a little dark and muted, but exhibit good balance. Contrast and shadow delineation are nicely rendered, with generally good visual information available in the darkest scenes. Some pixelization and edge enhancement are noticed, but overall, the picture is generally pleasing.
Soundtrack:
The Dolby® Digital 5.1-channel discrete remastered soundtrack seems to provide some modest yet welcome enhancements to the original matrix surround audio. The original, dated fidelity is apparent, and a bit of distortion can be noticed. The soundstage is usually constrained, with the music sometimes imparting the perception of expansiveness. There is a definite balance toward the screen. Dialogue is presented with a "laid-back" presence, with voices having fair spatial integration. The surrounds are appropriately engaged, and there is even some split surround enhancement. Deep bass consists of occasional rumbles that have been incorporated along with some .1 LFE into the original audio. Subtle enhancements help to somewhat enliven the sonic experience.
