Although Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, the third part of George Miller's post-apocalyptic Mad Max trilogy, is certainly the least of the bunch (Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior is the undisputed masterpiece, and maybe the best action movie ever made), it has still got a good share of imaginative industrial-wasteland-pastiche imagery. And casting Tina Turner as Aunty Entity, the queen of Bartertown, was a masterstroke. Mel Gibson's character Max is pitted in a battle to the death against the bizarre Master Blaster in the Thunderdome, flying around on rubbery straps inside a sort of gigantic overturned colander with bloodthirsty spectators clinging to the outside. Miller's producing partner, Byron Kennedy, was killed in a helicopter crash while scouting locations for this film. Miller was devastated, only agreeing to direct the action sequences--and, somehow, you feel his heart wasn't entirely in it. --Jim Emerson

Story Synopsis:
Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome is the third part to the Australian futuristic cult tale. Mad Max (Gibson) is the title hero who once again takes on the out-of-control merciless barbarians of the post-nuclear future. Only this time, he becomes the savior of a tribe of children. Turner is Aunty Entity, the powerful dominatrix who seeks Max as a tool to strengthen her hold on Barter Town and the Thunderdome arena. The Mad Max style remains intact with loads of visionary chase scenes, magnificent costumes and scrap metal vehicles.

DVD Picture:
First reviewed in Issue 9, the LaserDisc picture is severely recomposed at 2.50:1 while the DVD is composed at 2.45:1 in the anamorphic and letterbox formats. None of the releases actually properly display the picture at the 2.35:1 Panavision® scope aspect ratio. The LaserDisc picture quality is excellent, though the DVD anamorphic component video version, with fully saturated color, is the preferred presentation. But images appear slightly more orange hued and blacks are a bit brownish rather than deep black as they are on the LaserDisc. Nonetheless, the DVD looks richer in chroma fidelity and is sharper and more detailed compared to the LaserDisc.

Soundtrack:
The LaserDisc Dolby® Surround soundtrack is excellent with aggressive surround envelopment and a directional music score punctuated with unusual sound effects. The DVD has a remastered Dolby Digital discrete soundtrack that sounds to be a 4.1-channel mix with fortified bass and a wider soundstage presence.
